Love is a tricky word in the English language because we group many things under that linguistic umbrella. Infatuation is what makes us take a risk with the other person to form a union. Once together, evolutionary speaking we strive for stability to form and raise a family so that feverish infatuation simmers down to a different kind of love commitment.
Shakespeare wanted infatuation but not commitment. He got stuck in a wedlock. He lamented that he “hit it but couldn’t quit it.” ;-D
Shakespeare was a great writer of infatuation. He fulfilled financial obligations, but not committed affections to Anne Hathaway. Their marriage was a wedlock, where she was already pregnant and willing and he was simply too young and reluctant. I am guessing his great writings of infatuation were eulogies for the death of his desire for a punch-drunk love.
