It is no accident our word “hypocrite” comes from the Greek for actor! Great introduction to the thought of Rousseau. His ideas are so timely right now as we attempt to deal with all the problems he himself predicted 250 years ago. So glad to see someone else seriously engaging with him publicly.
One thing worth pointing out about your comparison between Athens & Sparta - “The Athenians, they left us with beautiful art, architecture, philosophy, tragedies…” - this ignores the Athenians unlikely route of the Persians at Marathon (as well as their contributions at Salamis) which may well have saved Western Civilization
